Applications for SWY 2025 National Leader are now closed

Have you attended SWY before and want to lead a new group of young Australian leaders? Or are you working in youth affairs and want to get involved in supporting a group of young Australians in a major international exchange program? Apply now to be the Australian National Leader for SWY 2025!

National Leaders are responsible for organising, mentoring, and supporting the Australian delegation on SWY 2025. They play a role in preparing the delegation for the SWY program, and liaise with the Cabinet Office of Japan, the Japanese Embassy in Australia, and the SWY Australia Alumni executive to ensure the program in selecting, training, and supporting the delegates.

Before commencing your application for National Leader, we recommend you pre-prepare answers to the short answer questions in a separate document to ensure you don't lose your responses.  These questions are listed below.

  • Program dates: 

    • NL online meeting dates

      • October 12, 2024 (Saturday) 12:00 - 14:00 (Japan Standard Time)

      • October 26, 2024 (S) 12:00 - 14:00 (Japan Standard Time)

    • Program dates: 

      • Online exchange: 24 November 2024 and 7 December 2024

      • Canberra Pre Departure training: 6-8 December 2024

      • Official Program: January 24th 2025 - February 21st 2025 (please account for the possibility of flying one day earlier or later)

  • Participating countries: People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Australia, Federative Republic of Brazil, Republic of Djibouti, Arab Republic of Egypt, Sultanate of Oman, Republic of Panama, Republic of Peru, Republic of Poland, Republic of Senegal, Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Kingdom of Sweden, Japan

  • Pre-ship activities in Tokyo

  • Port of call: Shizuoka and Shimane, Japan

Eligibility for National Leader

  • Be an Australian citizen and currently live in Australia 

  • Be in good physical and mental condition to tolerate a long voyage (due to being onboard a ship without access to emergency medical care, people who are pregnant and who have some medical conditions are not able to participate in this program)

  • Possess considerable knowledge of Australia and the capability to share Australian culture

  • Have a good command of English

  • Be able to participate in all SWY 2025 program dates, including online dates, Canberra pre-departure training, and Japan program dates

  • Be able to participate in the pre-departure training in Canberra at your own expense (if travelling to Canberra is an inhibiting factor in applying, we encourage you to reach out to our team to discuss options)

  • Capacity to adhere strictly to the program schedule and live harmoniously in a large group

  • Preferably in your thirties (and/or have significant leadership and mentoring experience)

  • Preferably be belonging to youth organisations as officers, in the governmental organisation related to youth affairs, or ex-participating youth of this program

Selection criteria

  • Highly adaptable and able to accept change

  • Culturally competent (Japanese language a benefit but not essential)

  • Able to represent Australia to a high level and enforce program expectations of behaviour from participants

  • Capacity and experience with youth/young adult leadership and mentorship

  • High level of emotional intelligence and awareness
